The first public speaking event I ever did I hid behind the podium. Over 10 years later I avoid it like the plague, move around the class, make eye contact, ask students questions and don't be afraid to call on the ones that may be distracted. Bringing someone back into the lecture makes it morre of a discussion and helps the entire class with the activity.
