Generation time frames for ED117

After reading and working through the ED117 module I thought that the dates for the generational groups were off by a number of years. The veteran generation were from WW1 to 1930. From 1930 to 1950 it was the silent majority. From 1950 to 1970 were the baby boomers. From 1970 to 1990 are the generation X. and from 1990 to present are the generation Y. I also discussed these dates with my mother who was born in 1933 and she agreed that the dates were a bit missed skewed. I was born in 1953 and I am considered a boomer my sister born in 1962 is also considered to be in the boomer generation. Our early education even with the difference in our years was pretty much the same...rote learning. The only technology we had in the classroom at that time was a television with specialized closed circuit educational programing.

Hi folks, I will admit that the center and focus on specifics for this course was by far the most challenging I have taken, as it does cover a lot of the macro sense of each generation. To add to this, I have always had a generation discussion related to business management, with my students. There is not one time, in my multiple times I teach these courses, that one student, at minimum, will try to justify that although the macro descriptions of each generation re true, not all of the representatives in each generation do demonstrate all of the characteristics. IN other words, they may relate their way of being due to thru upbringing. So this is the basic challenge I see with this topic, and quite an interesting one.

Learning more about Gen Y learners is always worthwhile.  This helps us to understand that students are not intentionally ignoring us when they turn to their gadgets.  They are engaged in what they think is essential to their lives.  The problem arises when the technology gets in the way of course process and course content.

I feel I learned alot about the Y leaners that will help me with my interactions with them, and to effectivly comunicate with them.
