"One Word"

As a lead instructor I read many student evaluations on both the instructor and class. There is one word that comes up consistently either positively or negatively. CARE, positively - the instructor took the time to know me and CARED about my education. Negatively- The instructor could CARE less if I succeeded or failed. Teaching is pretty simple if you stop and think about it.

Good Morning Kevin,

I am new to this type of Profession and Enjoyed reading your Blog on "One Word."  As I enter into this new realm, students have been very critical and downright aggressive on their written evaluations towards my Style of Presentation in our Theory Class.  Obviously, I took these comments to heart and am planning a New Strategy on How to Present the Material for the Students to Learn and Understand at the level they currently are required to know.   Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Caring Professor,

Sharyl

Hi Kevin,

I totally agree with your "One Word".  I make every effort to learn the students name's as quickly as possible and spell and pronounce them correctly.  Just that one little simple courtsey means so much to them that I took the time to learn their names demonstrates my caring for them as individual students, and that they are important and they mater.  I think that is a very good foundation to start the class off with, making them feel important and cared about.
