Retention-Attention

Attention.  What is attention? It is when we take the time to listen to someone else.  We take the time to see every individual with our eyes and look beyond that person. We look beyond their physical appearance.  We wonder about their lives. Each individual has a story to tell about themselves. We recognize  each individual is made up of mind, body, and soul. When a student approaches, a smile from the faculty will open up avenues of communication.  We express concern, availability, and ultimately attention.  This student will feel wanted, respected, and will want to stay in school.  l

The attention we can show our students to help with retention

Yes, indeed the attention we can show our students help with retention.  Students look forward in coming to school to learn, and be acknowledged. It is by acknowledging someone that we establish rapport and ultimitly the student will trust the instructor.

Yes and sometimes, students will come in late or misbehave simply to get attention (much like children do at times - any attention, bad or good, is desired). By promoting positive attention and letting the students know they are valued as people and not just a warm body filling a seat, they will be more willing to put forth effort in their studies. They will often want to please you as an instructor and will not want to disappoint you.

Sometimes students do misbehave.  Some students come in late. Other students will bring a negative attitude to the class.  I think it is very important to address the issue as quickly as possible.  The student will hopefully recognize that this behavior is not tolerated.  The instructor should approach the student in a professional manner.     The instructor should set boundaries as well. Therefore, attention does promote retention.

Indifference can be hurtful to people, making them feel less valuable. It makes sense that giving attention to others will help them feel like a worth while individual. This is not only important for creating the correct environment for our students, but our coworkers, as well.
