Instructors' primary purpose is not to teach but to facilitate learning. Integrally, critical observation can help identify students' disengaging and the immediate need to respond through one-on-one interaction to those who have disengaged in order to identify causes and potential remedies, including through changes to the instructional design.

Students cannot actively engage with material without having a foundation from which to build an understanding; therefore, students must be (passively) provided this foundation then transitioned to a point of actively engaging with it.

Active Learning requires stimulating as many of students' senses as possible while providing opportunities for students to collaborate among themselves, to take time to individually ponder and wrestle with material, and to demonstrate their ability to apply what they have learned to new scenarios.
