I believe it is important to checks student background prior to signning them up for school. Especially, in the medical field, many times a criminal background will restrict the types of licensure you can obtain. I want my students to have the best educational options for them.

Topics

I like to select topics that are in the news. So each class period we have section called "In the News", where we talk about current events and how they relate to our current course of study. I have found the sections helps the students understand the importance of what they are learning.

Building a Rapport

I always start class with a short video which discusses topics such as stress, feeling overwhelm, and managing time wisely. The video ends with words of encouragement or tips to help student continue to push forward. By going so, my students feel like they can talk with me openly about the different issues handling them back from being successful at which time we can create a plan together.

Feedback

I have found that student really do appreicated feedback both positive and negative. Therefore, on their assignments that I hand back I always write some type of comment, thus giving them daily feedback.

Difficulties with Adult Learners

I have found as an adult educator the most of my students have difficulties balancing household stressors and continuing the educating. Most of my students are single mothers and need to work in order to take care of their families. So often times they have to choose between school and work. I wonder how other edcuators help to encourage their students in similar situations?

Exit Interviews

I believe exit interviews are key to our students. At those interviews, we ask the satisfication with the school (course and instructors) and give them helpful information about job placement and the intreview process. It is also a time to update student records. I believe it is the last chance we have to make sure our student's expectations have been meet.

Recruitment Process

As a college graduate understanding my students loans and the repayment process was key. Many students do not understand the type of debt they could carry after graduating school. I think during the recruitment process it is our responsiblity to ensure our students fully understand the pressure they could feel to pay back those student loans before the begin taking classes.

Media Influence

The media has a strong influence both positive and negative on many areas of our lives. It influences the types of food we and the type of medicine we ask the doctor to prescribe us. With that being said, we can not expect the media to influence our students. Therefore, we need as educators need to create positive media attention. Along with a positive reputation for our schools in the community.

Opening students eyes

I believe it is important to relate course work to real world experiences. I have learned over the years, students often have a hard time understanding how course work relates to their future career. I make it a point to connect those dots for them.
