Hi Karine!

Great ideas in ways to engage students! I like to post a "QUESTIONS" in our first weekly discussion to ask if any of the students have any "real world" questions they would like to know about working the health care field or industry. This usually generates a great discussion because they begin asking questions that I can follow up with information regarding the health care industry, and their expectations as future employees. This builds their enthusiasm for the remaining weeks with me. :)

Hi Sarah,

Yes! Like you, I have found that I many times will call a student and email a student, and not get a reply. However, if I text, I many times do get a reply.  It is amazing to me the different ways we can use to reach a student, and what method works best for each.

Lauree - I think your idea of making videos is awesome! What an interesting way to engage students! I would love to see one of your examples! Great work!!

Many times I have students who wait until there is only 1 or 2 days left in the week to complete all tasks. This is when we see their assignments are lacking in information, they have not followed the guidelines, or answered all of the questions adequately. Teaching on-line students the importance of time management and communication is one of the hardest things I find as an on-line instructor. However, as this tutorial explained, if we can set aside a time to speak directly to the student and relate how the information learned in the course can be applied to… >>>

What I found challenging about EL107 is that being a "Baby Boomer" I am learning much of this new tech myself, which is hard to transfer into the classroom, expecially if you feel ill prepared to demonstrate what the new tech can do or how to use it yourself. I personally do not even own an "I Phone" or Tablet, much less know how to use them. Additionally, I do not have the resources to purchase these types of technology. However, I am aware and do understand the differing learning styles, and abilities of my students. I am always accessable… >>>

I felt EL107 was a great learning experience for me. I feel I need to learn as much of the new technology as our students in order to hold their interest and provide ultimate learning outcomes.

Hi All,

The time spent was a bit lengthy, but great information disseminated throughout! :)

I just finished EL105 and it was a great refresher about the communication styles used for differing generations of students. It is important that we remember we have a variety of student who come fron various backgrounds, and we must consider the most effective ways to reach out to each. I also liked that the grading rubric was mentioned for fair and consistent grading.

Hi Lisa,

I can relate to what you mention here. Many times we do get in a rut if we teach the same class over and over. We have to remember it is NEW for our students however. I find when I teach a class repeatedly, I like to see where previous students struggled and try to revise these areas for clarification for my new students. I am very happy when I then receive feedback about how my new additions, such as a video of how to look up codes in the CPT manual helped them.

I just completed EL104. It was interesting to learn about synchronous and asynchronous learning enviroments, and how we as instructors can facilitate in such a way to improve learning outcomes. I enjoyed reading everyone's posts!

The ED106 module helped to reinforce how and what we can do for our students with learning disabilities. I really enjoyed the different ways that teaching students in small groups can be benefial as well. Movement in the classroom is also essential. We should never get stuck in that rut where we just sit or stand behind something and lecture. Our students become bored, and their motivation may be undermined by doing this. Teach like we would like to be taught! Use examples and stories that relate to the subject matter.
