Both race and culture are important. Our students differences should be taken into account as it steers the instruction.

Registered  Nurses are taught that there are illnesses that effect specific cultures and diseases have their own characteristics that assist in the diagnosing of the disease.
we are taught to compartmentalize symptoms, illnesses and cultural characteristics that make them susceptible to certain diseases.

stereotyping is detrimental to the group stereotype, diminishes the person but also cuts short the learning process and stops students from meeting their full potential. Often students themselves do not fully know all of their own diversities and by being free to learn, they can become more aware of themselves and their patients

Instructors should be motivators. Offering your expertise is a huge motivator for students. This models behavior and the Instructor is looked at as a skilled professional in the career area.

One of the biggest reasons why students drop out- is because of all the time and resources they are expected to commit on school. Students find that they just dont have the time to get everything in their lives done.

I must say you have illustrated some important points here that impact learning for sure!

The instructors attitude influences the students learning, and it is common that halfway through the class the Instructor may feel as if they are in a slump. Demotivated, and not as excited as before. It is imperative that they REFOCUS.

This course emphasized on the importance of getting to know your students name on their first day, and asking for a bit of infomation from them so you can get to know them. These actions give the students a feeling of worth and respect.

This module has taught me how important making an effort to learn your students names on their first day is. Also its important to get to know them a little, find out where they came from and where they would like to go. I recently had a classroom of 14 students and the course was over 5 weeks. I struggled to learn everyones name, but I did make an effort to ask each of them to please write their names on a folded piece of paper so over time I could learn their names.

The faculty member can assist in the retention of students by understanding their backgrounds, their goals, their intentions as well as their fears. Student frustration is largely related to four areas that include, people, impersonal problems, rules and limitations.  Creating a supportive environment must focus on two areas which include intrinsic needs and extrinsic needs. The intrinsic needs focus on their educational pathway and incorporates factors such as students having the drive to learn a new skill, be competent in an area, acquire another skill set, succeed, do well and feel involved and interact with people.

So far, I have learned that the characteristics of the learner are unique and incorporate the different age groups of students (age diversity). The average age of the student is 28 years old. Each age group has their own needs and expectations. Other characteristics involve cultural diversity, disabilities, fears, and support systems.

The retention of students is largely based on student frustration which falls into 4 categories, namely, impersonal problems, people, rules and limitations. This is helpful when evaluating the overall needs of your students.

Sometimes when I am in front of my students i will have a moment where I am unsure of myself, and my self-confidence drops dramatically.

I found the suggestions on how to deliver a quality lecture very helpful.

Don't read your lecture (I am guilty of this)

Prepare yourself emotionally for class

Avoid a cold start,

Grab students' attention with your opening,

Vary your opening,

Announce the objectives for the class, and
