Consent is huge and I think its important to note that consent can be withdrawn at any time, prior consent does not mean that this instance was given consent, and the lack of fighting or saying no does not mean consent.
It’s nice to know that even off-campus sex-based harassment can be investigated, as appropriate. I like when examples are given that can help us better understand these outliers, like the cyberstalking and how it was added to VAWA.
I think it is important to remember if you are about to be told information by a student/employee regarding a sex-based harassment incident and they wish for it to remain confidential, you need to let them know about your responsibility to report. You also should never discourage anyone from reporting or going to the police.
This was a new topic me and it was interesting to learn. I found it important to know that the Title IX, VAWA, and Clery act are all related but that a title IX verbal sex-based harassment wouldn’t fall under a VAWA crime or Clery crime. I will have to find out the information related to our specific university.
It’s important to be reflective. Also knowing the differences between learning preferences and learning challenges. Providing content in a variety of learning styles will reach more students.
Just because someone is learning ESL or as a new language, we cannot assume where they are in the process and how it is/will affect their learning. We need to learn more about these students on a personal level and give them the time and resources that can help them succeed.
Acknowledging the cultural differences and the impact it has on a person personally is important. We do not want to diminish the culture or the impact it has on a student.
It’s important to be aware of my own biases and stereotypes. Providing a safe and inclusive environment will ensure the success of students.
Career education students differ from your normal university students and giving them relevant information that they can apply to their learning and future practice will help with their success.
Recognizing the mid-term slump and how to regroup yourself and REFOCUS as helpful. Also getting feedback from students both on what the have learned and what is to come and how they can build on the knowledge they learned in the 1st half to continue to apply in the 2nd half was helpful.
