Patricia, You have correctly identified some of the benefits and drawbacks associated with video conferencing. There are also the limitations of bandwidth and allowable numbers of participants. If you can overcome those obstacles, having one video conference a month or a quarter and phone conferences in between is a good strategy. Another strategy to increase participation is to send out the agenda in advance and require some type of pre-work to being to the meeting. During the meeting, everybody can address their item and that can stimulate conversation. Dr. Jamie Morley
Patricia, The technique you described is often called a “roping closure.” It is always a good idea to end the meeting by allowing every person to restate what they learned or their greatest take-away from the meeting. It is also very important to take good minutes so that everybody has them to refer to later. Dr. Jamie Morley
Tina, You make a good point about diversity transcending the professional life of a team member. The personal aspects of diversity typically form a person’s attitudes and values. People learn from a very young age about cultural and ethnic differences. As educators and managers, we have the responsibility to model and embrace diversity. Dr. Jamie Morley

Roy, I agree with all of your approaches. Of special note is your comments about praising employees. I don’t know why we feel comfortable giving praise to students and not employees sometimes. Smart organizations are “learning organizations” which makes all employees students as well from time to time so that they stay sharp. Dr. Jamie Morley

Roy, Excellent response. You make some very good points about the importance of being able to create harmony as a leader. Based on the book you referenced, you may also want to read, “Servant Leadership” by Robert Greenleaf. He expounds on the points you make very well! Dr. Jamie Morley
angel, You are correct in that it is important to set boundaries for your team so that people do not work on activities that are outside the scope of the project or their role. However, sometimes having strict boundaries can squelch the creative abilities of a team. What strategies do you use to ensure that your team mates are staying on track without inhibiting them? Beth, I agree with your. However, sometimes the work they enjoy may not be the work that is most needed or that they are the best at completing. Rotating responsibilities is a great way to keep people enthusiastic about being on the team, while also building and diversifying their skill level. By giving team members “stretch assignments” they have the opportunity to grow and develop, thereby becoming move valuable members of your team. Another idea is creating subgroups. Subgroups allow more people to assume leadership roles. It also enables participants to join a group that especially interests them. Often, this… >>>

cindy, I agree with you that people can receive training to bring out or strengthen their leadership qualities. People can also be taught the fundamentals of management and supervision, as well as how to follow and implement policies and procedures. That training can help them be a better manager. Inspiring a people requires both. Do you agree? Dr. Jamie Morley
