Much of what you will read and even from your own experience, there is a logic to support the importance of in-person education for hands-on opportunities to learn and practice skills and trades. Additionally, there is a logic to the increased access and flexibility of online learning. However, beyond both of these is the challenge of designing education to be as engaging as possible. What that looks like will be different for every course and even every student. However, as an instructor, begin by intentionally listing the kinds of engagement you can support in your course so that you can… >>>

Engagement and collaboration increases with tablet use because students are involved in manipulation, meaning using their tablets and opening apps as instruction is occurring. Instructors can link tablets together so students can coordinate their efforts and solve problems together.

The challenge that was being created for educators was how to make use of these devices in a way that did not distract from the learning process while providing support to students in their work and research. As everyone was getting familiar with tablets and how they could be used, apps of all kinds were being developed to support the technical aspects of tablet operation. This put educators in the position of needing to become familiar with the operation of tablets, as well as how to identify and select apps that would support learning.

Many students have problems with organization when it comes to papers, projects, and class notes.  Tablets let students put everything in one place where it is ready to be retrieved as needed. I intend to apply this by using Microsoft OneNote software because it is very useful when working with a tablet.

Tablets have many advantages, as have been listed, and there are thousands of apps that are available to you and your students. I plan to explore different apps that will be beneficial to the courses I teach.

I hope to incorporate healthy coping mechanisms into my personal and professional life. I also enjoyed the Time and Stress Management for Instructors, especially about taking control of my time, making more time for me, understanding what is stressing me out, and how to get on the road to stress free living.

Five coping mechanisms that were provided were: sharing, exercise, breathing, stretching, and getting enough sleep.

The first step to better organization is to define the space that you will be working in and the space where your class materials will be stored. By defining your space, you will know exactly where your belongings and materials are and where they are not. After you have defined your working space, you must make sure that it is clean and that it does not contain unnecessary items that are taking up space.

The obstacle of control: Once you recognize that you are in control of your time, you can make choices that allow you to strike a healthy balance between giving time to yourself and giving time to others.

For the 2020-2021 school year, I hope to try incorporating blogs into my curriculum. Some examples of blogging from this unit were:

  • Students provide commentary on a research topic pertinent to the course.
  • Students develop a central point for text, images, and links to other blogs.
  • Students develop an interactive format to explain the subject matter.
  • Students develop tools for social advocacy pertinent to their field of study.
  • Students become cognizant regarding real-time, real-life scenarios like catastrophes.
