Activity

It's important to let your students know WIIFM- Getting them involved emotionally with the study material helps students become motivated. By making the course content clear by providing a syllabus and deadlines for assignments, you are showing the students relevancy and application of the content so they see they are preparing for success after graduation.

You should be on the lookout and be aware of better and different ways you can offer instruction. Learning styles vary, so you should vary your delivery to address as many styles as possible. Prepare demonstrations before class and practice them, have a back up plan incase something goes wrong.

It's important to introduce yourself, tell the students a bit about yourself and your background and have them do the same. Give them an outline of the course, the goals, and expectations for the course.

Being prepared is key. Be knowledgeable in the subject and what resources are available to you and your students, know requirements of the field, hold your students accountable, and keep a note pad handy for reminders to yourself.

Be a model, manager, and a motivator. The "soft" skills you model will be an important part of what you teach your students; being on time, good hygiene, neatness, being prepared, and getting along with others. Setting goals for yourself and encouraging your students in theirs is important; all of us are always learning and growing.
