I agree there is a push to verify and increase the integrity of online institutions.  I do hope the push continues into traditional, campus-based institutions as well.  There is an assumption that traditional campus-based courses and programs have a higher academic and operational integrity than online institutions.  While there may be examples of online institutions that fall into this category, there are also traditional institutions as well.  Those institutions seem to not make the news.

Assessments are so intrical to the learning process.  Even though they may take many hours of planning, researching, and constructing, they serve the best method of gauging student learning.

I have used rubrics for over 15 years and have had great success in students meeting outcomes.

Alternative assessments are great for focusing on students as individuals.  There is more than one way to learn so it stands to reason there is more than one way to asses learning.

I will have to admit, online assessment tools have become plentiful and varied.  I have been out of the classroom for three years now and seem to have fallen behind in the latest technology.  I have used Rubistar, SurveyMonkey, ExamView, and Moodle.  There are so many more options I would have love to have when I was teaching.  Socrative looks very appealing.  Has anyone used it?

Currently, my action plan is to continue in course design using concepts such as Backward Design by Wiggins and McTighe, student engagement and learning techniques by Marzono, and assessment of learning and for learning by P. Black, as well as RJ Stiggins.

There needs to be a sense of a risk-free environment, so students feel comfortable submitting thoughts and responses without judgment.  Starting with a poll so that students identities are anonymous is one way to set up that environment.  Posting questions with more than one right answer so students can express without penalty.  Setting up the course delivery so that continuous participation is needed is key. Students need to realize participation is necessary.

The concepts used to construct a F2F course and an online course are the same.  Start with the learning outcomes, what do you what students to know and be able to do, and build from there.  Choices made in content delivery, student engagement, and assessments are all designed to achieve the learning outcome.  Whether it is online or F2F the process is the same and the options are the same, what choices we make depends much upon the outcomes, the content, and the instructor's teaching style.  What many need to consider is the variable of student learning styles.  This is… >>>

There is a debate over whether to accept late work or not, when to accept it, and how much penalty (if any) should be assessed.  I wanted to know thoughts about late work in an online classroom in both sychronous and asychronous environments.

I have been an instructor for 25 years and a curriculum designer for 15 years.  Designing backwards from what you what the students to know and do, including scaffolding assignments and incorporating formative and summative assessments leads to a well constructed course and increase student learning.  Implementing rubrics and giving feedback enhances student learning.  I plan on continuing this process when designing courses.
