The biggest obstacle that I have run into as an online instructor is student procrastination and their overestimation of their technical skills. I am learning through this course that it is greatly my responsibility to creative an online learning environment that keeps students engaged and on track. 

 

Certainly some extent of tech savvy is necessary for online students. Since I started teaching online classes, I have found that the younger generation, that I presumed would adapt easily to online, are not as knowledgable as I had expected. Conversely, I have found that older generation students know more than I assumed they would. I've also found that younger students have a tendency to get frustrated and give up more often than older students. 

 

Motivation and time management are critical components of online learning. Instructors must cultivste an environment that encourages motivation and teaches students how to manage their time effectively. This is made possible through communication. 

 

Online may not be a good option for students that tend to procrastinate or that have very busy personal lives. Online may also be much more challenging for students with dyslexia and ADHD. It is important to make student expectations clear in the LMS. The online/technology knowledge surveys are are great idea.

 

I understand what they are trying to get across in this module; however, I'm struggling to figure out how to please every student in some standardized way. Especially students that I will probably never even see in person. 

 

I definitely agree that most teachers start out with authoritative/lecture style teaching. In my experience, the teachers that do not migrate away from that style seem to have the most difficulty effectively communicating with students. 

 

This concept was easier to learn than others. I think it is because the personality colors already fit our perceptions of what those colors represent. 

Identifying a student's personality type is very important, especially if they are having issues in the class. Because the way that you resolve an issue must be condusive to their personality type; otherwise, you may stay stuck in the same issue with the student. 

 

Frequently evaluating, analysing, and updating content is crucial in online learning. 

It is very important to let online students know that you are paying attention to their progress through the course and that you care about how they are doing.
