i remind students we have a councilor if they need someone to talk to. and if they arent comfortable with that i am a good ear, i just might not have all of the answers but i'll give them a hand in trying to figure out how to deal with the situation

Retention

As an instructor, I like to tell students on the first day sop, what to expect out of the class, what is expected of them, and I like to explain to them why my class is important for there success in the industry and why they should stay with my class.

First Day

Every first day of our 3 week rotations we review all of the rules and guidelines for the class. if a student misses first day they miss alot of information. So i try to get the missing guy up to speed when they finally show up.

Making Mistakes

I let the students know it is ok to make mistakes.Just dont let them beat you up from them but learn from them.Then as class continues i will bring up mistakes i made in the field that pertain to what we are learning that day.

new instructor mistakes

one mistake i have seen over and over with new instructors is admiting when they are wrong. i find if i make a mistake and i own up to it and say something like"hey we all make mistakes" it lets the students see the human side of you and yes it is ok to make mistakes as long as you learn from them.

problem students

I usually pull them out of class and talk to them. if problem continues student gets written up then management has to deal with them. problem solved.

unfocused students

especially young ones. i usually will pull them aside and have an adult conversation with them alone to find out what the problem is and i just dont let it end there. everyday i ask them how they are doing and if the "problem" is still there. they seem to appreciate that some one cares and that they can come to me if the problem starts again. its amazing how far a little recognition and respect goes they feel they can trust you.

first day of class

first day of class I first introduce myself, let students know who i am where i come from,my credentials. then i go into what the class is about. first i talk about the projects and how they are graded on them. then i talk about class patricipation and how they are graded on that. quizzes then attendance and i stress on the attendance because like in the real world you have to be an employee that is there in order to get paid. i also set the stage for how class is run and what kind of respect i expect… >>>

i agree

we can feed into negativity or bad attitudes and some one who is already on the edge of cracking might just do that. but if we turn it around on them we can affect attitud which in turn may affect the mental state of the individual and the class as a whole.
