I agree, games are always a very helpful learning tool. Encouragement is an important factor to guide a shy student to become more interactive.

Anytime you can incorporate a game in the lesson, do so. Everyone tends to open up when they are invovled in a game.

I try to make sure that my small groups are continually changing so the same people are not always in the same groups.

I have also had more success using a game like jeopardy where each person participates. The shy students engage in the game. It also works to guide the focus on important concepts.
