READING ALOUD

Hi all,Have found that even when told to do so in advance that most students will not do reading assignments. That is why I will begin reading the material aloud myself first for a few paragraphs than have the students pick up and read aloud at least one paragraph each until the entire chapter is read aloud in class so no one student can say "We did not cover that in class."Seems to keep them involved even if they would rather not be.

I think this is a great idea, I will try it myself.

Yes, this strategy works. Moreover, I do comprehension and reading improvement in the class. Reading aloud gives other students to be interactive and pick on each other's mistakes or help each other. There is comraderie among the students to help each other.

I find that having students read aloud gives them better comprehesion plus it gives a student a chance to ask question they may not have normally.

We read aloud for as much as possible to have the entire class participate.

I also think this is a good idea. Forcing the student to read and Prounounce the words that pertain to the field of work you teach is crucial, especially in the medical field where students will interact with patients. They must be competent in the material and be able to explain, using the terms they will have read aloud in class, to patients during post-operative procedures, etc. This is such a helpful thing!

Yes, this is what I love to do! When materials are covered this way, students tend to gain a better understanding of the subject matter. Also, if they have any questions, they will more than likely ask them too.

This is a good idea, but how do you handle the student that is shy by nature and is made uncomfortable when reading aloud in public?

what if a student refuses to read? I have encountered that one time the good thing was I felt something wasn't right and I didn't push it come to find out the student stutters when nervious and he has to sound out most of the words

I had a student that came up to me and said that he does not like to read out loud. I asked him to read to me privately. He had a problem with fluency. He stated that he did not want to embarrass himself in front of his classmates because he would be with them for the entire program. I told him that I would not force him, but I would like him to practice reading out loud at home maybe even tape record his reading. He told me that his reading is slowly getting better.

They are in school to learn and develop themselves into whatever field they are going to after they finish the course. This is a good practice for them, after all in any field of work they have to speak up, try not to be shy and express themselves. It's part of the training.

I agree with this also. I have my students read aloud the chapters. They seem to retain more information this way.
