ppt presentations

A power point presentation can be a form of torture if not used properly. When looking at a new slide and opening it up with a question and why it may be important will bring interest to the topic. By handing out physical components and explaining how they will incorporating this new information out in lab helps dramatically

HI Jan - Thank you for your post to the forum. You illustrated some of the problems with using PPT while lecturing but also gave us some solutions - Thanks! Susan

I agree that the learning experience is less than optimal when the PPT contains all the lecture information. This allows the students to have a "mental holiday" and they do not engage themselves in the learning process. I have stopped giving the PPT handouts and have the students take their own lecture notes. Also, I have animated the bullet points on the slides so that they come up one at a time as I am explaining them. If the entire slide pops up at once, the class is furiously copying every word and not listening to the instructor explanation.

I've gotten away from ppt presentations that have the content from the book. I find students use them too much as a crutch not don't read the text, etc. It also becomes boring for the student when the ppt is saying the exact same thing that I am saying. I use them to display pictures and charts and graphs and related items that take up too much time for me to draw or write on the board.

Jeffrey I agree with you. I am starting to use it for my Review sheet for the test. So I can get feedback from the student.

Our students love to have the powere point printed for them in this format. This can be a great tool, but I have noticed that the effectivenss of learning can be diminished when the power points have all the course content in them. The students tend use these a crutch and not pay attention as much in class, so I try to include only the main points, and make themtake their own notes.

I like the problem solving slides best, class is more fun when everyone gets to vote for thier answers.

Absolutley Chad- in career education getting our students to look critically at the products, services etc. that they will be working with is really important.

Patrick, that's a great way to use ppt! Printing the slides at maybe 6 to a page with the note-taking ability is perfect. They view the slides, listen to the lecture and add the notes as they go per slide.

Power Point presentation bring focus to the class and I always give a print out of the course for them to keep and write comments.

I agree, I like to use the slides to challenge them to look for the components out in lab and see how they may differ from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Very good I agree with you 100% we need to ad what ever we can on the topic to make sure students under stand! Good Job.

A perfect example of how to effectively use PPT to appeal to all the learning styles - Thanks Arthur!
