MAKE the student ask questions
One possible technique is to, at the end of a class session, to ask the students to prepare questions for the next class session. It will force the student to assess their own depth of knowledge of the subject matter (and hopefully motivate them to deepen it in the process). The kinds of questions they ask will also give the instructor valuable insight into the student's learning style and level of learning.
I agree this helps have them review the material as well and is a great way to get the next class started.
Hi Scott - Welcome to Ed 103! I think that asking the students to prepare questions for the next class is a great idea. They will need to review the lesson to prepare their questions and retention will most likely improve. Best wishes for continued success i n your teaching career! Susan
I, too have the students ask questions. This gives you a etter understaning if they are grasping the content provided. By their questions it can guide you where one or more are at in the class.
I agree that having students prepare questions for class is an effective teaching tool. I like to assign readings and have the students prepare discussion questions. To encourage discussion and touch on all learning styles I often like to break students up into small groups and have them ask their discussion questions. I also like the idea of student's preparing questions because I can see trends of understanding (or misunderstanding) through the class.
