Question session after the lecture
After every lecture I have a question and answer session with the students.
This gives me an assessment of who actually understands the material, who was paying attention, and who is struggling with understanding the material.
The response I receive from the students is excellent.
Hi Karen - The immediate feedback that you are securing from your students is very valuable. It tells you where you need to review concepts and where you can move ahead. Great work! Susan
I usually have incorporate critical thinking questions during my lecture. This allows the class to break up the lecturing and draw attention to the students so that they can have interacting conversations about the subject we just learned.
Hi Stephanie- Thanks for your post to the forum. Breaking up your lecture to allow students to discuss what they have just learned is an excellent strategy. As they discuss the material, they are having to apply it and this increases retention. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I think this is a great idea to give a question and answer session....I do the same thing and I ask the questions.
I use it as a small review and a fun way to hit some of the highlights again.
As you know some students do not pick up the material given out that day.
They might need time to go over the material at home or come to you after school and ask for help.
I hope this would not be a way to tell if the student was not paying attention,or struggling.
If I was one of these students I would not even participate in fear of looking less smart then my class.
I was one of those students who would not answer question was paying attention and just needed more time and extra help to go over the material. Just my opinion and the way I use the question session after lecture.
