reaching that one student...

What are some effective ways in engaging the student(s) in class discussion who are shy to answer beacuse they are not doing well in the class and are seeimingly feeling "dumb" when they cannot answer correctly?

Hi Rachael, I would prepare some questions that I am SURE they can answer and/or bring the topic to an area I know they have personal experience with. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Sometimes we as instructors ask certain questions directed to specific students who are very shy nd and intimidated in class. These questions are usually related to topics that were just discussed . This is a way of checking if the student is focused and paying attention to the lecture. When a student is struglling to come up with the right answer , I may lead him or her to the correct answer by giving the student more information to work with.

Sometimes a student who does not engage much in class will surprise me and come up after class and ask a really good question. Some students are harder to reach or do not want to participate but often, these students are very interested in the material. Every student is different and some of the quieter students often are very interested in the subject matter.
