Assessment everyday
I have found here that we assess the students every day, but not always do we use the formative method. I think that if I start using this I will achieve better results from the students for two reasons. 1: If they are lacking, they will want to increase their understanding and not fall behind. 2: if they are doing well they will have more confidence to do even better.
You bring up a good point Mike. Too often I think we use assessment to find out what students don't know. Assessment does indeed tell our students when they are doing well which encourages them to do even better!
Plus, if you assess more frequently you may discover a problem early enough so that the student will be successful in the entire class. If a student lacks mastery of the basic concepts, he/she may become frustrated and sadly struggle with more difficult subject matter.
I agree, the formative method will us the instructor the ability to catch those students are not doing well, by catching it early
It also lets us as instructors know we are doing our jobs correctly. Because we need to be assessed as well. The more our students retain and can access information the more I get excited for them and for me!! What greater reward is there..
in my class assessment is needed everyday because my students do multiple tasks. It helps me evaluate them in every aspect of their learning.
I, TOTALLY AGREE, THE USE OF DAILY ASSESMENT IS A GREAT TOOL TO LET THE STUDENTS AND THE INSTRUCTOR KNOW WHERE THE STUDENTS ARE FAILING, AND IT GIVES THE INSTRUCTOR A CHANCE TO TAKE CORRECTIVE MEASURES INMEDIATELLY SO THAT THE STUDENTS DON'T FALL BEHIND AND ARE ABLE TO LEARN AND RETAIN WHAT IS BEING TAUGHT ON A DAILY BASIS.
I have found that letting the student know that they are being assessed everyday for a certain career goal helps them perform at a higher level during class time. Showing them the key points of the assessment like attendance, attitude, participation, testing, and practical makes them aware and perform better.
Hi Timothy - I so totally agree! As career educators we need to prepare our students for the workplace and so acclimating them to daily assessment is the right way to go. We are responsible for making sure that they have the technical/business skills as well as the softskills (never figured out why they are called this -they are just as tough to learn!);-)
I give a daily quiz which usually consists of an electrical diagram. I start off simple and work my way up to more complicated diagrams. I was suprised one day when I neglected to give the quiz and the students complained and actually asked for it. What I considered to be an assessment tool, they considered a learning tool. All the students in the class looked forward to the quiz. It also helped thier test grades as they go better with the drawings.
