Student self assessments can be particularly helpful at the beginning of a course and at the end. At the beginning, a student can reflect on what they know about a subject and establish some goals for the course. At the end of the course they can take inventory of the knowledge they have gained and compare it to where they were at the start.

I think alot of times if a student looks within themselves they can determine what they need to do better.

students need to learn to be objectively critical of their own work so that they may improve. Its hard for anyone to be that introspective.

Self- assessment are great tools to get an idea where the student perceive themselves professionally - often I will have classes in which the students have a very wide disparity in experience level. Some students will be new to the profession while others have 8-10 years of experience. Getting their self-assessments up from allows me to identify the experienced professional and let them know up front that I acknowledge their expertise and experiences and will appreciate their input thru out the course. I direct questions to the more experienced professional frequently. It keep them engaged and brings out allot of great discussions. Additionally acknowledging the lesser experienced students seems to put them at easy. They ask questions more openly.

How can student self-assessments be used effectively in career college settings?
In adult education this will assist the instructor personalize the lesson and questions based on the student's understanding of the topic an background. For younger students, this may provide both feedback to a younger student with possibly unrealistic expectations to understand they need to learn more, as well as enable an instructor to both understand the student's limitations and possibly address them in a more private setting with suggestions on how the student could become more successful with some focused studying.

The use of student self-assessments can be a very effective learning tool if it is used properly. The first thing the instructor needs to do is set the ground rules with the class highlighting what goals they are trying to achieve by using self-assessments and what degree of evaluation should be used on the assessment. This will get the students to buy into the process by understanding what is in it for them personally and will set a bar on the evaluation process so some people will not be too harsh or light on their assessment of another students work. In my opinion, having used these in the past, these types of assessments are great for evaluating content. Additionally, as students assess the content of another students work it generates opportunities for questions and collaboration.

Self assessments can help the student stay on track towards their goal.

This is true, however, the current student population will blatantly answer that they do not prepare for the next class and take their computerized exams on the last minute. I have had several students check "yes" to the question if the material presented was understood. Even when discussion time over the covered material was given, those particular students would not participate.

It will provide an understanding to the instructor as to how students utilize information; problem solve; critically think. Based on these things, the instructor can develop an individual learning plan for the student.

It can help the facilitator recognize the areas where the student is going to need help, and to develop the road-map for the course.

Hi Penny, Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree that without feedback, assessments are not very useful for students. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

It seems to help the students when they can actually see their correct responses, opposed to the wrong responses and what they need to do to make them right.

I like the idea of ungraded quizzes. It shows them what they have gotten right and wrong.

This resource is very valuable. I appreciate being able to have a deeper understand of the ways to optimize the student's learning and engagement. I feel that now I will be able to select various criteria depending on the dynamics of the students.

Students can utilize self assessments as learning tools by observing other students and different instructors in order to see themselves at a different level.

Self assessment is something I just started using. When a massage student works on another student "client" they receive both positive feedback as well as something they need to work on. I have now included the therapist to assess their abilities and get feedback from their client as to what they thought about the therapist's assessment of themselves. I think this allows the therapist to see how the client perceives the therapist assessment of themselves. Sometimes it is close to the same and sometimes it is a lot different.

In Career College setting the self-assessment can help the student evaluate themselves.
