the value of fast turn-a-round of grades for a test...

if grades are delayed then the students are not present in mind to absorbe the new teaching material ... I find getting the material back before the 2nd break to be ideal... the students know unless an earthquake happens they will have feed back to be discussed in private after class..

I totally agree! Plus it enables you to close out the old materials, and move onto the new topics. Everyone is happy and it certainly helps to know your academic standing in the class.

Hi Jessica, Wow - excellent and swift feedback for your students - great work! Best wishes - Susan

I typically grade tests and assignments within 24 hours if I am able. I also let my students know on a weekly basis what their grade is in the class so there is no question about how they are doing.

Hi Nancy - Thanks for your post to the forum. Absolutely, Until students know what they did not understand from previous instruction, new material
will often not be learned as it usually builds on what came earlier. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I try to get a test back to the student asap. the longer the delay the greater the increase in anxiety and there is a decrease in learning until they know where they stand..

It's my belief that fast turn-around of grades is essential to not only the customer-service element for our students, but simply put, it's give the student a clearer understanding of how the instructor views them as a critical consumer. Let's face it, education these days isn't cheap by any stretch of the imagination and we owe it to our "customer" to provide them with top level service.

I agree with you. The value of fast turn-a-around of grades for a test helps the student to evaluate their studies skills and comprhension of the subject. I feel that it also helps the instructor evaluate the test content and how to better present the information for future students.Such as what points need to be clarified or presented in another light. Plus I tell my students to keep track of their test grades and this helps eliminate the gusess work of how the student is doing in class. I find that some students are so grade fixated.

Hi Albert - I could not agree more! Students want to know where they went wrong and also how well they did. Also it gives us the information that we need to adjust our instruction. Best wishes - Susan

This is a topic I feel strongly about. Returning graded papers to students by the very next class session is crucial to the learning process.

Receiving their grades in a timely manner allow students to "re-group" and focus on the next topic. It also gives them a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction in their progress.

Likewise, it allows us to immediately intervene and help students that are struggling with the tested material.

Hi Cheryl - Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, that rapid feedback is important especially as we build on what students already have learned. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Students love immediate feedback. They lose interest in learning from the test (and any mistakes) if there is a delay in returning test scores.

Hi Thomas - Thanks for your post to the forum. The feedback that you are giving to your students is excellent! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hi kevin - thanks for your post to the forum. I agree - we need to meet the same expectations as we have for our students. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I agree that we owe our students timely feedback on their tests. We expect our students to turn assignments in on time; they should be given the same consideration. Additionally, we should conduct a thorough review of the test and be available to discuss any discrepancies or questions that individuals might have.

I agree that it is very impotant to give the grades early to keep them focussed and in the track, and also to go over the answers with them. It is good to remember to congragulate the high grade students and discuss personaly with the law grade ones

Yes, I agree. Students usually forget assignments if they are handed back not in a timely manner.

I would agree, the faster you get grades and information back to the students, better you are at keeping them on track and focusing on the next lecture.

Hi Carrie- Thanks for your post to the forum. I think that sometimes it depends on the type of test. i know when I assign an essay it takes a while to read and correct 22 essays! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I believe that test anxiety is a result of students fearing how well they did on a test, so the sooner graded test are returned to students, the lesser anxiety they will have in the future. If test are not returned before test are returned, students will not focus on the new material because they are still thinking about their test results.
