testing

I like all forms of testing. On every test I give I will have one or two essay questions. I do this so the students can express their own thoughts about a subject.

Hi Tami - Thanks for your post to the forum. I also like to use essay for the reason you mention. Students can convey more of what they know in this format. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I am still working through giving my students short answers to complete because the students feel like they do not need to be challenged past multiple choice or true and false. I am working my way up to "springing" an essay question on an exam.

Hi Dawna- Thanks for your post to the forum. I think that once you "surprise" your students with a short essay question, they will be surprised to find that it gives them a better opportunity to demonstrate what they know! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hi Susan, I completely agree with you about the "surprise" short essay. I personally prefer essays because I find that they give me an incentive to actually learn and apply the course material rather than simply memorizing words. Most students really need to step out of their box of orthodox learning and seriously consider what types of learners they really are.
