Quiz and Test
My style is to give a quiz on a weekly basis. This give me an idea as to where the class/students are in understanding the lecture, course and assignments. After each quiz, I review to identify if most of the students did not answer the same question correctly. I then, discuss in detail each question students miss or did not understand.
Hi Ina- That is also how I handle quizzes. I also find it useful to use those quizzes as reviews for mid-terms or final exams. Susan
A weekly test is the best way to get students to participate and study.
Hi Victor- Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree that weekly assessments are a valuable source of feedback for both student and instructor. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Testing student weekly is a great way for student to learn content of the course. In addition weekly test give the instructor feedback to where the student knowledge of the course material on a weekly basis.
That sounds just like how i test and quiz as well. I always go over material just to make sure everyone understood the material. Especially when it has to do with application skills
HI Deidra - Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, frequent timely feedback avoids the unwelcome "surprises" when we only use midterms and/or finals! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I agree wholeheartedly. I use the same strategy you describe
I like weekly or small daily quizes. I think they help students hear the material more than one time.
I also give a quiz on a weekly basis and this gives me a better idea if the students are keeping up the reading and lectures. I also do a review the day before the quiz which is pretty extensive. I can always tell the students who do some additonal studying before the quiz by the grade they receive on the quiz. Some students still think they can get away without studying for the quiz and do well.

Hi Patrick - The frequesnt quizzes also enable us to make "course corrections" when necessary. Susan
I like the weekly quizzes as well, not only do you see where they are, if they read the information, you also reiterate the information. Repeating information as many times as possible seems to help alot.
I do that too. I use weekly quizzes when I can keep up with it and then use it to gauge student comprehension and as review for midterm and final.
Instead of actual quizzes, I review for a test using Turning Point, if more than half the students miss a question we stop and discuss what the answer is and why that is the answer to make sure they understand the material. If the majority miss the questions then I feel I may not have covered it well enough and I stop right then and there and recover that material. I like that it is a "right now" response and discussion.
Hi Cynthia, I am not familiar with Turning Point - can you please enlighten me?

Susan,
Turning Point is an option that can be added to PowerPoint, it is actually a program that uses PowerPoint. You can put questions into the slide and the students have what we call a clicker then they select their answer, when all have answered it shows a percentage of who selected A, B, C, or D, then you can show the correct answer and discuss the question if many missed it. I use it for test reviews and in PowerPoint presentations every so often to see if they are getting what they should be from the material being presented.

I think that test and quizzes are very important because they are essentials tools to rate and monitor the growth of the students.
