getting to know goals of students
my classes have students with multiple career goals I try to anticipate their interests on several levels assigning tasks in a way to keep their interest ..important to be aware of individual needs and not group students as each student has own history of past experiences to bring to class activities..
Applying specific student interests help map the class to it.
With multiple goals in one classroom I have to find some common ground, and that is the industry they are all learning. I feel it is important to let them know that skills recieved in one area will compliment skills in another area. I also ask them not to "Pigeon Hole" themselves into thinking that they know what their life interest are at this point in time and be open to all training provided. I also give examples of how anyone's interests and life goals can change.

This is a very nice way to look at it. Instead of everything being group related, give the students a chance to express their individuality. I know this means a lot to the students as well. This is a very good point.
From my own experiences, student motivation increases with relevance of the course material to their personal goals and lives. Finding out more about student interests and future aspirations as the course continues helps me to individually find ways to apply course learning and activites to each student on a personal level.
Hi Lillian!
How do you find out more about personal aspirations - what indicators are you looking for?
Thanks and keep up the good work!

I like to get to know the students goals to help me connect with the students...If I know what their intentions are I can use that to help keep them motivated and steer them in the correct pathways to help them succeed.
I often ask my students what their goals are sometimes I dont think they are sure what they are and somtimes they are as simple as I want to graduate either way it makes them think about it and some will come back after some time with an answer.
