Group projects in foundation-level courses

While the online course material's points on the value that group projects offer (through teamwork, forced participation, and diversity of experience) are well taken, it seems to me that this sort of project is better suited to upper-level projects.

What sort of group projects seem most appropriate for a foundation-level course that is more fact, elements, fundamentals, and basic theory based?

I cannot say there is one way that is better than another, but in our foundations class I try to use different kinds of group work so that students can experience different ways of learning. I might pass out an article and a worksheet and ask the group to answer together in class or I could give them a problem and have them brainstorm a solution. I also try to incorporate one major project that requires work oustside of class that day. I think students need to realized group dynamics play an important role in productivity, and what better way to teach them about real world group situations they will encounter at their jobs than simulating these experiences in the classroom?

I'm teaching an Introductory Psychology class online. I agree with Erin that using groups simulates real-world experience students may have in their careers. I plan to put students in small groups during some classes, pose a question/problem/scenario, and ask them to brainstorm together. I'd also like to have them work on a scientific paper together, giving each student a section to work on, and letting them know they should work together to make sure everyone understands and succeeds.

Hi Scott,

I seem to find a similar problem when deciding to put my students that are learning entry level fundamentals together in groups. I feel like for the entry level classes, they should get a good foundational understanding, and I don't want to waist time in groups if they don't even understand the material well enough yet. I will try to find at least one project to put them in teams with before the end of class but I try not to do it often in foundational-level courses, although I am willing to try new things to see how the class responds.

I really like your suggestion of an article review. I teach microbiology and its hard to find small group projects that are relevant but I think I'll keep any eye out for relevant articles.
