Group work
If learning groups are too large, some students tend to "ride the coat-tails" of the more dedicated students.
Christopher,
this is definitely true & that's why I like to keep them about 3-5 if possible.
Dr. Ryan Meers
When I find those students who do like to ride the coat-tails I find if I ask them to perform a task and they are having a hard time with it,those students will step it up a notch.
I like to split the class up into smaller groups because of this. I also don't always let the students choose their own group.
Nicole,
I definitely think we need to be ready to step in & form the groups for them.
Dr. Ryan Meers
I ask students in a group to fill out a form and send it to me through e-mail. The form allows each group member to grade the other group members. Everyone knows this and helps make everyone accountable to the group and not ride coat tails.
