Attention Spans.
Growing up I had learning issues myself. It as hard for me to sit in the chair for hours on end listening to the teacher talk about the lessons of the day. She then gave me the option to stand at my desk or in the back of the room to listen to her. It made a great difference and my grades got better. How says you have to sit to learn.
i agree. you should be able to move around. i also have trouble staying still.
This is one reason we give break every 50 minutes for 10 minutes and half hour for lunch. I have also had discussion with a student who had ADHD and suggest that they sit in the back and could stand if they needed.
I agree. It is so difficult to come up with new ideas to keep the students interested when they are in a classroom for more than 4 hours. The breaks are helpful but I also like to change it up. We perform skits, play games, lecture and review material.
I agree with this strategy and use it too. At times students don't want to leave the room or even stand up. I try to encourage them to move around a little especially if it has been a lecture session and not a lab session where they are engaged with work and/or other students.
I also agree with the discussion. Students with short attention spans need to get up move arround and be an active participant in the classroom. The downside is maintaining classroom control.
