reading difficulties
One method I tried with students who have reading problems is to prepare a vocabulary lsit for the chapter ahead of time. When they study this list it definitely helps them understand the concepts. They seem to know the basic english words. The knowledge of key vocabulary words seems to unlock the more important theme of a chapter.
Martin I totally agree. The list ahead of time gives people the ability to practice saying the word out loud or in their head and look up the definition so when it comes up in the middle of a sentence they understand what it means as they read! I've taught some employees in a dental office that some dental terminology sound like area of the mouth or tooth you are talking about: such as the "distal" part of a tooth is the most "distant" part of tooth - which is the backside. :o)
A review of key concepts and definitions prior to a test or quiz is helpful.
The student has had a chance to read and talk about the concept. A review just helps to cement those concepts.

You're right, this helps review those concepts that they've already learned & just further cements the information in their heads.

I also provide these students with a vocabulary list and then incorporate the terms in our discussions. Then I will encourage their use of the terms by creating scenarios that require an answer that includes use of the terms. This aids in building their confidence.
