Praise
I find positive reinforcement to be essential when encouraging students trying a new career in a technical field. Especially being open minded and may not be "technically sound" is always a challenge.
Wilfred,
What kinds of positive reinforcement do you use?
Judy Mohammed
I agree that praise is especially important when working with students that may have even a shred of doubt in their mind. I usually will (if my goal is both knowledge and self-esteem building) start with a good question that I know they will answer correctly, usually a closed question. Then I will continue with a more difficult and usually open ended question encouraging and praising them along the way. About 9 times out of 10 this results in a student that has a better grasp on the material, and more confidence in themselves.
William,
Great techniques! You are incorporating questioning with praise and learning with excellent results.

Wilfred,
I am also in the technical field and I find that there are many solutions to questions that can be obtained through the utilization of many different technical tools.
Carl
Carl,
Can you share some of these tools with us?
Judy Mohammed
I feel praise can go a long way in encouraging adult students to stay on track in a career school.
Brian,
I absolutely agree with you. We all like to be praised, however, if we praise for everything, we might beware that our praise lose some value.
