Daniel,
Very true. Think about how you would spend that classroom time to guide student learning.
Dr. Moody Crews
Lisa,
Very good point. I would go so far as to say without experiential learning there will never be true mastery of anything. No matter how many times someone reads something.
Dr. Moody Crews
Mark,
I agree and pretty much everyone will have those multiple responsibilities outside of the classroom.
Dr. Moody Crews
Jeffery,
Great. Practice and performance - Two keys to learning.
Dr. Moody Crews
Earle,
This is true. I hope you are thinking about how you can do it properly. Think about what that would look like in your classroom.

Advantages for our allied health students in particular would be more hands-on practice in the lab, as well as more time for guest speakers and field trips. Critical thinking is a must and, in the traditional setting, there is so much lecture to finish that we often don't have time to discuss the critical thinking aspects. I would like to use more case study and scenario discussions to get our students thinking about the skills they will need to use every day on the job.
The textbook our school uses for two of the math courses I teach contain a DVD Lecture Series, where the author of the textbook gives roughly 20 minute lectures on each of the sections in her text. This would be beneficial in the flipped classroom as one of the primary components is the accessibility of the prerecorded lectures. Students can view and review lectures at a pace appropriate for them.
I would need to investigate if there are any prerecorded lectures for the other textbooks. If not, I would have to look into what steps would be necessary to create my own prerecorded lectures.
Rhonda,
I totally agree. Using case studies and scenarios are always good learning tools.
Dr. Moody Crews
Philip,
I agree that the DVD lecture series would be good as long as what you are doing in class follows the DVD. However, using prerecorded lectures that you create yourself would be a better fit because you know that the students are getting what you know they need. Remember, textbooks aren't created for your particular class. Instead, we do our best to make the textbook work with the curriculum we are required to teach.

Yes, the 24/7 is a great for busy people and more students seem to have more distractions then in the past, but does it cause a flow problems in a way students retain and use the new found knowledge?
Some of the benefits and advantages of the flipped classroom are more student-based learning, more instructor interaction with students, being able to reach students at various levels, and also increase differentiated learning.
I have had many Arab American students that struggle with the language difference. For them a word may have many meanings and when they try to translate a technical definition they often fail. This leads to frustration and they sometime surrender to there ignorance. Being able to review a prerecorded description of the work that is expected, would allow them the luxury and time to investigate, define and understand the text and the project. It would help to alleviate after class tutoring to bring them up to speed.
I also believe in using videos to better help students to incorporate various learning points. This is where technology can be so helpful,
Advantages: Students are able to approach material and take it in at their own speed. By covering lecture material at home and from a video-based platform, students can privately view the material. This allows them to approach things at their own pace without worry of peers noticing them moving slower or faster. Students can stop, pause, rewind, and fast forward material so that they can examine things in their own way.
Markia,
I don't think so. I would think the flow would be improved.
Dr. Moody Crews
Quebec,
All very good points. True instructor interaction leads to understanding the various learning levels of our students because we actually have time to see them in action.
Dr. Moody Crews
Frank,
Very good points. This would also give the instructor additional time in the classroom to help the student with any problems they may be having.
Dr. Moody Crews
James ,
Can you think of any other benefits?
Dr. Moody Crews
Angela,
Very well stated. The self pacing is very important.
Dr. Moody Crews
I think from a technical stand point this type of learning can be very beneficial both from the video perspective to the hands on experience.
