How to create a non threatening environment in the classroom?

I completely agree to this idea that i just learned that giving overview about the class that we are teaching, providing a good and brief outline and a good summary of the lesson, choosing "pair think share" giving more secure sensation to the students

abdul.gardezy, when students feel safe to ask questions and share their ideas without risk of being embarrassed or feeling "stupid" they will register the course objectives at a higher level of understanding and recall.

I also think that allowing a "choice" in how a class is conducted with give students an incentive
to be more involved and take ownership, thus improving the learning process. I think this is vital in a class that is to be given. It also allows some flexibility for the instructor which inturns fosters creativity.

Stan, if conducted properly, giving students some autonomy on how a course is managed and graded can be a great motivational tool. Thanks for sharing.

I agree. I teach music theory to a bunch of guys who, mostly, could care less about it or just don't get it and get discouraged. When I give an outline at the beginning of class, go through every one of those points, then review at the end, I find that they are more motivated to learn or at least accept the subject. The interaction encourages those students to accept help from their peers who seem to catch on more quickly.

It is always important to establish class room etiquette on the first day of class so that students will feel safe and secure to express themselves.

Tifany, well stated. The more you set the stage and take control on day one the better overall experience you will have.

The overview of the class day is also extremely useful in the culinary classroom. When tasked with preparing multiple components, often with many different ingredients and techniques, having a clear and concise "end result" in mind is key to creating an environment where students can be successful. And just like any other educational environment, positive results yield positive feedback from the instructor, which does wonders in boosting student motivation.

Colin, well stated. Setting the stage and building a vision for your students as to the end result can be very helpful in establishing a safe learning environment.

I have run into the problem of having my students motivated to learn, but due to external issues outside of school, become discouraged. I remind them daily that life has a funny way of being discouraging at times, but its how we keep our goals at the forefront that make up succeed. Many of the techniques discussed in this presentation are being used at our school, so this has been a good refresher course for me. Keeping the environment non threatening to a student is always essential to learning and students will have a sense of meaning when attending class.

Jason, be careful not to confuse motivation for ability. Some students may be very motivated but lack the skills to be successful. Do you know who at home is cheering the student on to success? Knowing more about your student's support system can provide some insight into their overall ability to be successful. One negative influence may require 10 times the positive influence to overcome. You also need to consider possible learning disorders which can contribute to the appearance of a lack of motivation.

Writing out course objectives at the beginning of the class as well as a flip chart where students can post questions related to the topic for discussion and questions is a great idea that I use during my classes and trainings. I also give them quizzes to determine what kind of learner they are; many students have different learning styles and that also has an impact on their motivation in the classroom.

Ingrid, do you call them quizzes or inquiries? The word Quiz can create levels of stress in students. Thanks for anything you can share.
