students retention
we as instructors are the front line. We need to keep the students informed and respect there needs. Always keep them interested in all material be taught. Answer questions in a professional manner.
Hi Frank,
You are on point! Our students depend on us vastly! We must be there for them!!!
Patricia Scales
I think we all do that Frank. I believe the students need to be more participative in class and lab. Their education is as much their responsibility as it is ours....maybe more!
Hi Roy,
Students have to want it in order to get! Yes, we are their biggest cheerleader, but they must put forth effort!
Patricia Scales
Roy, I agree. The students really need to be active to get the most benefit from class and lab. I like to help them, but not do there work for them. Some need an extra push or nudge.
Young adult learners can be more difficult to motivate. I think that finding ways to keep students motivated can be the most challenging part of an instructor’s job.
Hi Martin,
Young adult learners love to stay busy through technology and hands-on activities.
Patricia Scales
I believe that we also must lead by example. To earn respect we must show respect.
Hi James,
You have it! If you give students respect they will normally in turn give you respect! We most certainly must be the professional that we want our students to become!
Patricia Scales
We also must give our students a clear vision of what it is we (student/instuctor partners) are trying to accomplish. Students must be able to see a goal. It is our job as instructors to give them a clear path to follow. My wife commented that kidney stones are much more painful than giving birth partially because you don't know what to expect and there's no prize at the end.
Hi David,
I love the analogy!! Our students do have a prize at the end, and we have to help them keep their eyes on the prize.
Patricia Scales
I couldn't agree more. How is it said? You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it learn. It is our responsibility to do everything we can to facilitate learning.
Hi NATHAN,
I concur! It is ultimately up to the student to put forth great effort in being successful.
