emails
how quickly should most emails be answered from students?
That's a great question Russel. Some students send us urgent emails that have to be addressed right away. But most of the time, you can wait a few hours or even up to a day to respond. As a general rule, assess the urgency of each student email request and prioritize accordingly.
I also feel that depending on the urgency of the email is how fast an instructor should answer. It should be answered as early as the same day or as late as the next day. Just like we expect them to have a great communication with us, they expect the same thing.
Yes, great communication works both ways Karla. And as instructors, we've really got to lead by example.
I have a rule to answer e-mails from my students within 24 hours.
I try to reply to emails within 24 hours. This helps the students get the information they need, but it also helps keeps my inbox from being too cluttered!
I tell my students on the first day of class how often I check email. for instance: I check email when I arrive at work at work, in-between classes, and at the end of class. Now they know when they can expect a response. In my opinion an email response should never go longer than twenty four hours.
I agree with this. I would never let a professional, non-student email go longer than 24 hours. I feel my students should have the same courtesy.
