Stress is something that we all must endure. Balancing lifes hurdles is sometimes difficult. I sometimes have to evaluate what I am doing and how much I am taking on. Over committing to work and family can be overwhelming and very stressful. Taking time out to do something that is good such as exercise or hanging out with friends can re focus us.
Thanks for sharing Thomas. A lot of people struggle with running because it's so high impact. It makes a huge difference on the way we feel but can also take a great toll on our bodies. I recommend swimming or walking as possible alternatives. You can engage in these low impact activities for many years without hurting yourself.
I used to work out frequently. I would run 4 - 6 miles a day. I injured my foot and presently can no longer do that. I did not know how much it helped in stress and also the time running allowed me to think of solutions to problems and help organize my days. I am currently looking for a new type of exercise that can help me in regaining my "independence"
It's amazing how much our outlook changes when we exercise Eric. I'm glad you have personally experienced the benefits. Doing so is highly reinforcing and keeps us coming back for more!
Yes, we're often better instructors with a little exercise. It can make so much of a difference on our anxiety level, mood and general outlook. If we don't do it for ourselves, we should at least do it for others!
I find that by not working out before i come into work I find myself felling anxious or unenthusiastic. Yet, if i do hit the gym i feel like i can conquer anything and be my energetic and motivating self the students love.
Yes, time for you is a great thing to schedule Kim. It's one of our most important tasks - yet it's one of the last ones we choose to focus on. It's important to focus on you every now and then.
I completely agree, overcommitting is can compound the stress we already have. It is always a good idea to schedule time for yourself to blow of steam. Ways to do this is either a session at the gym, relaxing work in the garden, catching up with friends over coffee or a meal. It doesn't matter how you destress, you must do it or it will consumne you.
Yes! I stop class one time per hour; the student can take a break, can stay in class and do some yoga, or the student can go outside and choose to do something unhealthy, such as smoke cigarettes or consume caffeine. It is so obvious even to the students' peers those who choose the coffee and cigarettes. Those students are "up" and then quickly loose energy and are falling asleep prior to the next break. I also teach my students how to make and prioritize a to-do list. Many students do not realize that they have control in their lives!!!
Thank you,
