New class given to you the night before class starts?
How can you make a new class at ease when you where just told about a class that you have to teach the night before. How can you handle this as you are trying to prepare for the class? The department head gives us a syllabus but, we do not have the proper time to get materials together.
Hi Claudia,
You stay up as long as you need to the night before in order to present your materail on night 1 effectively. The students do not need to know the notice you were given; this is irrelevant. Make a favorable impression on your students on night 1.

Thank you Patrciia!! I will do my best to make sure the students have an effective first night.
Hi Claudia,
You can do it! Go in prepared, confident, and knowledgeable.

I've shared your frustration many times (in one case I was told one hour before the start of the course that I would be teaching it....despite the fact I have reviewed the syllabus or text before!). Students will feed off of the vibes you give on whether or not you are prepared for the course. Any time you can devote to prepare will pay off for the entire course. I think the old saying, "never let them see you sweat" might apply here. Whatever you do, never, ever, tell the class your issues....
