Grade deductions
In my syllabus the students sign a document stating that they have read and understood how their grade can be deducted for reasons laid out in the policy and procedures. I feel this creates value.
I will except late home work but I give A 50% deduction for it
It is important to express to the students that completing the assigned tasks in a timely manner not only makes them a "better employee" but it also helps them understand the course material. Countless times I have counseled a failing student about how doing the assigned work would have helped them with the subject tests. They always admit this fact when turning in the homework after the fact.
Hi Donna,
I concur! Students feel the serious side of the syllabus when a signature is secured.

Hi Lisa,
This is a sure way to hit them where it hurts. This big-point deduction will encourage them to turn their work in on time.

I also get a signed document after reviewing the syllabus. I then get a signed statement that the students understand the late homework/project policy. The third statement they sign is for the 'check sheets' that must be completed in the Allied Health classes in order to pass the class. We have had some issues in the past with students stating that they did not fully understand, so now they have no excuse.
Hi Connie,
Great way to enssure clarity by securing a signature.

I have never had a student sign a form. I review the syllabus on the first day. I ask them to track their grades in their syllabus. If they are getting anything less than a 70% they did not pass.
All assignments are listed with due dates. At the begining of each class I post the learning objectives for the day, assignments that are due and when for the week. I really try to make them accountable for their work.

Hi Pamela,
We have to hold our students accountable. In the real world they will be accountable for their work.

I agree. I have done both, not included a signiture page and included the page on my distributed syllabi. A syllabus is essentually a 'contract' therefore by using a signiture page it makes the student more compliant to the terms and conditions of the course. I discovered that problems with assignment deadlines or missed quiz/exams occur less often and the student takes responsibility for their actions with minimal excuses in response following the consequences.
Hi Michael,
Students take a whole different take whenever a signature is secured. It grabs their attention to let them know that this is serious business.
