missing assignments

I have a student who has been strong in class and on quizzes and tests and is choosing not to do homework assignments. Homework is 15% of the grade. I have tried talking with the student privately, but the student has a busy life and is making a decision they feel is best for them and their situation due to the passing grade they are able to achieve without doing any homework. Should I stop speaking to the student about the missing assignments and accept the decision they have made?

Hi Sarah,
I typically just grade my students accordingly, and if they do not have their homework assignment they get a zero. After I see a pattern of about 2 times, I do have a private firm conversation with the student to let them know how their grade will be affected.

Great suggestion, thanks. I will find out if other teachers are experiencing similar lack of homework completion and what they have tried that work, too.

Hi Sarah,
You may want to find out if the student has a good rapport with another personnel, and if the student relationship is stronger with someone else try to get that person to talk to the student or even so just another personnel in general, like the DOE regardless of relationship.
