Re: Using a Well-prepared Syllabus

A well prepared syllabus is essential to help prepare and communicate course direction and objectives. Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,
Our students need as much direction as possible in order to be successful. We need to guide our students carefully through the learning process so that they can become quality employees.

I like the idea of highlighting important parts of the syllabus such as grading and assignment due dates. Most syllabi are huge documents that students do not read. Highlighting important sections would allow them to fast forward to the important information.

Hi James,
Smart idea! Our students really do not read, but they tend to read information that is emphasized through highlighting or some other type of formatting.

Not only talking about grading and assignments but also the big outlook of late assignments it really needed to be pointed out. And I like the idea of using different color paper for the syllabus.

Yes I do agree, my syllabus is in detail and I give my students exact dates assignments are due the first day of class. I noticed that there are less questions and confusion.

Hi Jennifer,
Whenever instructors are thorough with students as to what is expected of them there is little to no confusion, especially when it is in writing.

I am in total agreement with changing the appearance of various parts of the syllabus in order to bring them to the attention of students.
I think this is very effective.

Hi Sandra,

Trying using various formats, bold, underline, shading, borders, italic, etc. It is hard not to notice verbiage when it is emphasized by formatting.
