Ones own experience.
I find that when you use your own personal experiences to in getting some key points across it makes the student see you as one of them. I always manage to get my students attention when I tell them stories about myself. Of course I only use this information as it relates to the topic we are discussing.
Hi Joyce,
Students loving hearing our stories as they apply to the lesson. Experience really is the best teacher.

Yes, my students enjoy hearing stories of my own work experiences. Questions always follow, and I enjoy sharing it too.
Hi Lisa,
It also gives you as an instructor even more credibility when you can share experiences that are applicable to the lesson.

Could not agree more. Show them you have been where they are and some of the challenges you have had to overcome
Hi Douglas,
Students just automatically think our lives have been a cake walk. I share my struggles with my students and let them know through hard work anything is possible.

I like to tell my students stories of my experience. Sometimes I find that whole stories are not necessary, though. Sometimes just a simple "This happens alot!" or "I would see this situation frequently." can be enough to get students to sit up and pay attention. It lets students know you've experienced it and it does relate to their field.
I always refer to what I have dealt with in the medicl field to give the students a "real-life" situation. I love to see their eyes in disbelief. During orientation, I always give my background just to give them an idea of how far I have went with the degree they are there to obtain.
Hi Angela,
You do not have to give your students a long drawn out story to capture their attention. Most of the time, they love the quick stories better!

Hi LaKisha,
Awesome! You can be a great role model for your students. It sounds like you started where they have started, and you have made remarkable progress!

I share my experience with students and it helps to draw their attention more.

Indeed! Sharing personal experiences with students helps them see the instructor as a real person. This, in turn, helps them gain trust in the instructor and course and makes the students more invested in class.
Hi Ana,
I concur! Sharing personal experiences with students that is applicable to the lesson is a great way to bond with students.
