Late assignments

I think the example of turning in a late assignment was too lenient. In the real world you will not get e week to accomplish a task. I set a deadline for my homework assignments for the beginning of class on Monday, if the homework is not handed to me when I collect them, a zero is given for that assignment. I feel this is more of a real world experience. Bob

We make a assignment sheet with due dates and if the students don't hand them in on time they get a zero

The real world work place is full of deadlines. Just like assignments due they have deadlines. If these deadlines are not met there are consequences ,BUT as in the real world communication is very important. The more a student can communicate why the can't meet a due date, I am more willing to work with them. Life happens, I know that but if your life is unorganized and full of drama then you need to focus and prioritize your commitments. Often times they may need help with time management. Communication is key.

Hi JAMES,
Fair enough! Not meeting deadlines will not be tolerated in the workplace.

Hi Nate,

I concur! Not meeting deadlines in the workplace due to lame excuses is not going to work. Our students need to understand the importance of meeting deadlines.

Giving ground on late assignments will lead to even more late assignments from the rest of the class. It does not help a student to learn about the importance of deadlines.

Hi David,
Yes!!! Make students adhere to deadlines. We do them more harm than good when we are lenient on deadlines.

by setting a deadline for homework makes the student more responsible.when they enter the work force they must be on time and ready to work.homework also reinforces what they learned in class.

Hi FRANCIS,
Yes! Homework really teaches the students about the importance of meeting deadlines.

My experiences have taught me that there are only results not excuses...I firmly believe that being lenient is another form of enabling - no one benefits; especially the student.

Hi Cynthia,
That's right! Leniency causes way too many problems for the students. Students need to be held accountable and reprimanded if they are not. In the real world supervisors/employers are not going to be lenient.

I to have given handouts with the assignments and due dates. I have found that I have been giving way to much time to have them turn in their late assignments. I will have to make a change for the up coming quarter.

I see each student taking my course as if they are on a journey for the quarter. As they progress, they gather more skills to get them to their destination. If I give out a zero for an assignment that was not completed because a deadline has passed, that student will be missing a key piece of knowledge to get her to the end goal. I would rather have the student gain the knowledge provided by the assignment, even if it is tardy.

Hi James,
I understand your perspective! Your students should appreciate you working with them. Some instructors have zero tolerance for late assignments.
