Use-it-wisely vs. mandatory sharing cards

Is there a way to then encourage the quiet ones to share? For example, if I were to give out 4 blue cards and 1 yellow, blues are optional but yellows are mandatory? This way, everyone will contribute at least once per class period. Is there a smoother way to do something like this? I have a few outspoken students mixed in with more timid students and I would like them all to participate in each class.

Hi Althea,
I clearly understand! Great points made! Some students are always looking for ways to beat the system.

I like this idea, but like other posters, have some concern about how it will actually work. One concern is setting up a consequence for those yellow cards that aren't used. I can already anticipate the student questions about "trading" cards and "saving up" cards and "what do I lose if I don't use my cards?" It just gets exhausting to deal with those students who appear to be always "looking for the angle."

Hi Harrsion,
Eventually, everyone will come aboard! Students tend to warm up to this activity.

I think that all students should participate... Great for feedback(for you & your students). Helps to modify and keep the class plastic. So... everyone gets the cards and HAS to ask questions. Yes I "know", the first couple of times its going to be fairly lame, but will evolve. The timid ones will see the response and start to dig-it.

Hi Shantelle,
Put stipulations on the grading criteria if you think students are just comimg up with comments or questions just to get rid of their card.
Patricia

I think it's a good idea...but my worry is about the students that don't take it that seriously and make comments or ask questions that aren't really that relevant but they just want to get rid of their cards....

Hello Kristen,
Change the rules according to your liking.
