One strategy that I use with my students is:
~I show and tell my students what I want from them. I have learned that when you get what you want, you should acknowledge it. Never praise it.

Why you do not believe in praising students?
Patricia
I don't know that I agree with you Sabrina. I know that the student body that we have on campus, they want and most of all need to know when they are doing well. Praising them for a job well done, or grasping a topic that has been challenging for them all term will only boost their self-confidence and let them know that someone cares. I find that many of our students lack a support system at home and crave having a positive support system at school. For many of my students, the only praise they have received is from the staff at the school.
Praise is helpful for any age student.. in my opinion.
