My know-it-all

What a wonderful time to learn student management! My know-it-all student is frying my nerves. Her speaking out and interruptions are not only rude, but they confuse my students.
I am trying to think of things I can to re-structure my class so that I do not give her the opporunity to speak out. I don't think the card trick will work here. Any suggestions?

Amazing I also have a know it all student I also know that making her the observer will not work just as the card trick will not work. I only have 8 students including her in my class she not only is the know it all she seems to be the "gang leader" she has lots of influence on the class. I have noticed that when I have to talk with her (alone of course) all the class knows about it because when she becomes very emotional she cries and tells the whole class what we talked about of course she blames me. I am so frustrated with this behavior I could scream. I have already been to my PD and talked with the Educational Director. She plays the role of "mom" and thats what the students call her! what to do?

Hi Jaceita,
You have taken the appropriate steps. You may have to go to the top person, the director. Something has to be done with this student, this is unacceptable, as an academic dean, I would have already suspended this student for violation of the conduct code.

I feel the "mom" approach comes from a desire to keep the student happy. Unhappy students give a negative reflection of the school and might be a possible drop, so it is important to satisfy their needs for retention. Stick to your current method, and I would document everything. I think you are proceeding correctly.

When this happens in my classes I have the Know it All be come the guest lecturer. This seems to really make them aware of what its like to be in front of the class looking at themselves. Usually this works.

When this happens in my classes I actually use the "Know-it-all" as an opportunity to involve other, often times less-talkative students, in the topic supposedly "known". By changing the factual scenarios and developing the topic the "know-it-all" will retreat and the "less-talkatives" will blossum.

let them teach for 15 min and ask class opinion
