Cheating Students

I haven't had a problem before with students cheating on tests. Usually I build a connection with the students and motivate them to want to do well in class. They usually end up not wanting to disappoint me. I also walk around the classroom to let them know that I genuinely care about their futures. I believe I am successful with that. However, cheating via plaigerism is another thing. One of the assignments in my class is a research paper. Students must paraphrase or use quotes from their resource materials. However, every now and again I will get a student who plaigerizes directly from internet sources (and they are so easy to find). Then they act as if they don't care or did it on purpose due to lack of time. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to deal with this situation? Or has anyone had this experience, as well.

The best thing is to gain your students respect that way they won't wish to disapoint you. I had a proff at collage who once recived his own confrance presintation as a term papper

Hello Kevin,
I concur. When your students respect you, they will work very hard not to disappoint you.

Hi Brandi,
Your institution should have an honor code policy.

Cheating is not allowed in our program. We are preparing students to work in health care. We once had a group of students who were texting each other using their cell phones. Since this discovery, telephones are not allowed in the classrooom during testing.

Hi Erie,
Great job on rectifying this type of dishonesty!
Patricia

I'd start by giving the student a failing grade.

Hi Joseph,
Students should be reprimanded. At my institution if they are guilty of cheating, we start by giving a failing grade.

Absolutely! I recently had my first cheating student, and I feel everything was handled perfectly! This student received a zero on the exam and she now knows she is out of school if done again!! Hopefully, she will stop cheating and keep on progressing in school.
