Create an enviorment the makes cheating less appealing.
Inform your students that when they cheat they are only cheat themselves.My students know I am available for them for additional tutoring. In fact I use my lunch or breaks to provide that service. The ultimate goal is to have students suceed.
I always discuss at the beginning of each new class how the student is cheating themselves if they cheat. I think it is important to remind them of how humiliating it would be to be unprepared in the work environment because you do not have the knowledge you went to school for.
I also stress the need to know the info because they are caring for someone's family member - child, mom, grandfather etc, and they'd want their family member to be cared for by a knowledgable nurse.
I implement information found in homework to exams to help reduce students copying homework from eachother.

I agree and I will begin to use a similar philosophy in my new courses. I have had students cheat maybe this will help discourage them.
