Silent student

How do i get a silent student to interact even in small group settings?

It takes creativity and continued interactions with the quiet student as well as those that are verbally challenged

Hi Cheryl,
I love giving silent students a leadership role in the small setting.

I understand your situation. I have a SILENT student!! It has taken 22 or the 24 weeks to get her to volunteer answering questions in class. Last week when she stopped to make "small talk" with me, I felt like I had landed on the moon. It does take a lot of persistence, spending the extra time to get to know the student, etc., but worth every minute of it! Keep on keeping on!

Having had a very shy sister in my household I watched how my parents got her involved. By giving them small roles at first and working up to the bigger roles has worked wonders with some of the more shy students. To gain their confidence in interacting. The more comfortable they feel with those around them the more they are willing to get involved in most cases.

I love talking to the shy ones one on one and finding thier strengths. Then when we get to a relative topic i will ask thier advice in front of the class and try to get them to blossom.

I like your idea of giving silent students a leadership role... When we do class practices on myITlab, I have EACH student to come up and explain doing a task. In the beginning, they are shy, but by mid-semester, they become confident about doing the tasks, as well as communicating in front of their peers. I am sure to reinforce that there is no wrong answer, as their peers are encouraged to assist, when they stumble.

I agree, giving a slilent student a leadership role I believe helps them come out of their shell
