Instructor / Student relationship

I feel it is important to remember names and important details about students.

Hello Amy,
Why do you feel it is important to remember names and important details about students?
Patricia

Names an details about the students let them know we care and establish rapport with them.

It is very important. I have to struggle with names. I have 25 to 30 student in every class and this is not an easy task for me, but i continue to do my best.

I would agree it can be difficult when class size ranges from 20-30 students however I have noticed that when I can recall the names of my studnets, and when I can bring up their job experience and how it relates to the class discussion for example, it does wonders in the overall classroom attentiveness and engagement.

Hi Michael,
Students automatically draw to you whenever their names are known.
Patricia

Hi Kimberly,
Knowing student names does help build a relationship. Students want you to know their name. Consider using name tents for the first two weeks or so. Name tents are very helpful.
Patricia

As an instructor of online courses, one of the greatest challenges is developing a strong connection early on with students. It's important that from the first class session, you engage the class as much as possible so that they want to keep coming to class.

I belive that the student teacher relationship should be kept professional. On another level being a person they can look up to and feel comfortable enough to talk to. It is very important. I always try to remember names and a little bit about where they come from. It will make it easier to remember them by face later in their path to success. They like to see you as a human and not just someone telling them what to do.

Hi Bruce,
It truly should be a professional affair between the teacher and students. There should be a distinct separation between personal and professional.
Patricia

Hi Michael,
What do you do to engage your online classes to make them to want to continue to come?
Patricia

Hi Lisa,
We can establish a better rapport by learning our students better.
Patricia

I agree , this gives the student a sense of importance.

I agree about the names, but it depends on the details on wether or not it is important to know.If it is the wrong type of details, they could get in the way you react to the student.

Hi Timothy,
Using name tents is a great way to help memorize student names.
Patricia

Hi Laquita,
Students need to and want to feel important.
Patricia

I agree that a line should be maintained between the professional instructor and the student. I have a situation where I just learned that a student in my class lives in my same apartment complex in the building directly across from me. She knows that I live in the same complex but just not exactly where. She has offered to feed my cats when I go out of town (which is frequently). I have recently moved here and do not know anyone else. Should I allow her to feed my cats when I am gone, or is this crossing the line?

Hi Krista,
I would not allow my students to feed my cats whenever I am not in town. Although you do not know anyone, you need to make it a point to try to get to know your neighbors. Perhaps, another neighbor can help.
Patricia

I make every attempt in the first week of class to get to know my students on a "professional personal relationship". This way I can guage each individual on their wants for the class.
